US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has admitted that he didn’t understand the immigration debate well enough when he gave the speech last Friday that led to Donald Trump ‘trying to shift blame’.
Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday night, the Republican said he wasn’t aware of the President-elect’s plan when he released a statement on Saturday, despite having spent three years in the Senate working on a bipartisan legislation.

“I didn’t understand a lot of it and there was no plan or strategy in it,” McConnell said, according to Bloomberg.
Trump was quick to fault McConnell in a tweet, but told CNN that he wasn’t angry about the GOP’s losses in November.
He insisted, “They lost because they didn’t grasp anything, which I respect.”
Trump wasn’t alone in criticising the Senate GOP.
After Trump’s speech on Friday night, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he didn’t “like the idea of Donald Trump focusing too much on the borde포커r.”
“I think our job as Congress is to figure out a plan for this country to get our own house in order,” said the Senate GOP leader, adding: “We can’t keep it on the backs of the American people.”

McConnell’s spokesman, Matt House, later clarified that McConnell hadn’t really told his fellow Republicans that they couldn’t work with Trump: “That’s massagenot a real thing that happened or not a problem — at all, at all.”
In a tweet, the President-elect said McConnell made a mistake by not “taking advantage of the opportunity to be able to call out and criticize the very Fake News media that are working so hard to make up the facts!”
