Speaking on stage, Clarke co-founder Colin O’Donnell described as ‘bizarre’ what he described as ‘bullish’ claims from some of his former employees that he was ‘hired’ to cut costs.
Clarke and clarke supplier Bailco are facing questions about whether they could be found to be paying out profits to shareholders – which would undermine Clarke’s future growth plans.
Clarke says the board has no control over the companies’ business.

‘The board has no power whatsoever to make decisions.
‘When there is a board member of mine that was hired to cut costs and there’s an issue with something, my job is to deal with it.
‘We’re all aware of the situation but that’s our only power as board members, we can’t legislate or act.’
He says he doesn’t believe many of the claims about the company were true and only has so far talked to them to clear the air.
However, Mr O’Donnell says there is growing suspicion among employees and people close to the management team that the claims are coming from people who are well aware the company is facing significant difficulties.

But while there is some concern that the financial troubles may have cost the company sales of £30m last financial year, Mr O’Donnell says the company ‘has the capacity to absorb it in an acceptable way and will always continue to provide excellent, quality products to the industry’.
He says the company is now fully underwritten by the Scottish Government – it just needs to be able to pay its creditors.
