Indonesia cattle permits delay live export vessels entering Indonesian waters
Indonesia is attempting to sell its domestic cattle by allowing other countries to import from Indonesia through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea to import into Indonesia. Indonesian authorities have decided not to ban such exports because they are beneficial to domestic animal industries and they will not damage marine protected areas.
There are some exceptions to the ban. Some producers have been exempt from export bans by the Red Sea and Arabian Sea because of their ownership of imported goods or because they are in a state of high national security risk. However, other export-led producers have not been spared from sanctions or restrictions. The government has imposed sanctions on such producers.

Some of the countries listed on the report, from which the banned products may be purchased from under special rules of import, are Sudan, Syria and India.
As many as two million animals could be affected by these bans and the lack of food access or the possibility that a ban would apply to them due to the exporter’s commercial activity.
At the same time, over 200 animals may be killed if there is no meat available, said Director of Veterinary and Physiological Sciences Department Siti Ghanemi. For Indonesia, this ban will create substantial economic burden due to the cost of maintaining a domestic cattle industry, especially over the next four to six years, said the statement. This is especially so for the state government-led economy and for the environment as livestock is a major source of carbon, mercury, phosphorous and other pollutants.
Indonesia exports meat and fish to over 90 countries. The largest producer of beef, beef in particular, is Vietnam with over 10,000 animals slaughtered in 2012 according to the World Health Organization.
